About
Created in 1795, the Institut de France is a non-profit umbrella organization that provides the five academies – the Académie Française, the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-lettres, the Académie des Sciences, the Académie des Beaux-arts, and the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques – with a harmonious framework to further the advancement of the arts, humanities, and sciences.
As a patron, it encourages research, supports creativity, and provides funding for many humanitarian projects in the form of prizes, bursaries, and grants.
Placed under the protection of the President of the French Republic, the Institut de France maintains an extensive portfolio of architectural treasures and collections that have been bequeathed to the institution since the end of the 19th century.
A word from the Chancellor
The mission of the Institut de France is crucial and unique. We foster a community where scientific, literary and artistic work can be undertaken freely, for the benefit of all.
The Institute is not only a locus for the intersection of knowledge, but is also a dynamic center of philanthropy, and the guardian of an exceptional cultural and architectural heritage.
Through these combined missions, the Institut de France reveals itself as an institution dedicated to the Republic and the common good. France demonstrates its commitment to freedom of thought, research, and creation by placing the Institute under the protection of the Head of State, and beyond the reach of political imperatives and media cycles. Indeed, this is our founding commitment, the one that Boissy d’Anglas formulated in his speech – a bit bombastically, but nonetheless revelatory of the vision – at the National Convention on June 23, 1795: “We propose to create a National Institute [which] not only honors France alone, but the whole of humanity, by astonishing it with the spectacle of its power and the development of its strength.
The shared vision and work of the Academies and the Institute allow us to fulfill the ambitious goals of this magnificent project, where culture and knowledge are vectors of unity and strength for all in this great nation and abroad.”

Je mesure combien notre mission est cruciale et singulière. Nous ne nous prenons pas pour une institution inclassable ou supérieure, une tour d’ivoire jouissant d’un statut que d’aucuns jugent démodé.
Nous formons, dans nos spécificités, un lieu ouvert où peuvent s’exercer librement les travaux scientifiques, littéraires et artistiques, au service de tous.
C’est en cela que nous sommes une institution républicaine. C’est en cela que la France montre, en nous plaçant sous la protection du chef de l’État, qu’elle est fidèle à elle-même : une grande nation qui garantit la liberté de pensée, de création et de recherche, en dehors des querelles partisanes. Nous voulons scrupuleusement honorer cette confiance que la France nous a accordée.
Tel est bien notre engagement fondateur, celui que Boissy d’Anglas formula dans son discours – certes emphatique mais visionnaire – à la Convention nationale, le 23 juin 1795 : « Nous proposons de créer un Institut national [qui] honore non seulement la France seule, mais l’humanité toute entière, en l’étonnant par le spectacle de sa puissance et le développement de sa force. »
Toutes les conditions sont reunies pour poursuivre et reussir ce projet magnifique, grace a la volonte partagee et a la salutaire concorde de nos six entites (Academies et Institut).
À ma place, désormais, j’y concourrai de toute mon énergie, habité par la conviction que la culture et le savoir font prospérer l’unité, la force et la grandeur d’une nation.
