Foundations and Prizes
“Contribute on a non-profit basis to the improvement and influence of letters, the sciences, and the arts. To bestow prizes for useful inventions and discoveries, outstanding successes in the arts, great deeds, and the continual practice of personal and social virtues.”
-extract from 1795 updated by the law of April 18, 2006
Every year over €25 million are donated through the individual and corporate foundations housed within the Institut de France. Academicians selected for their expertise sit on the boards of these foundations to decide which initiatives should be funded based on the quality of the project and the alignment with the funder’s intentions.
One of our foundations can support it.
The foundations housed at the Institut de France provide support for a wide variety of initiatives that serve the common good.
Our Philanthropic
Mission
Philanthropist: “a person, who by disposition and natural goodness, loves all of mankind” Dictionary of the Académie Française, 1762.
A founding principle of the academies, the philanthropic mission of the Institut de France continues to evolve and plays a privileged role in modern philanthropy in France and abroad.
Through its actions, the Institut de France promotes dialogue between all players in philanthropy, whether they are individuals, companies, association managers, artists, writers, public decision-makers, and academics, thus enabling the implementation of concrete solutions for the benefit of society.
A Philanthropic hub in France, the Institute organizes multi-year public conferences entitled “Words of Foundations” to discuss a common theme. These meetings bring together the individual foundations of the Institute and their founders, academics, laureates, and stakeholders specialized in philanthropy and sponsorship from around the world. Find the latest editions of “Words of Foundations” on inadequate housing, the planet, and education. Register for the next meeting on the theme: “Health and medical research, philanthropy in action.”

Donations and bequests
To be accepted by the Institut de France, donations or bequests proposed by companies or individuals must contribute to the Institute’s public service and general interest mission, defined in 1795:
“Contribute on a non-profit basis to the improvement and influence of letters, the sciences, and the arts. To bestow prizes for useful inventions and discoveries, distinguished successes in the arts, great deeds, and the continual practice of personal and social virtues.”
Once a donation or bequest is accepted, we scrupulously adhere to the donor’s wishes for the assignment of the fund. Donations can be allocated to an existing foundation, or a new foundation may be created to carry out the envisaged mission.
The Institut de France will support the notary of the donor or the estate in all the necessary procedures.
Why create a Foundation at the Institut de France ?
Worldwide Recognition
The Institute brings together the most eminent interdisciplinary scholars in France and prominent representatives of the largest foreign scholarly institutions, thus bringing unique expertise to the world. Academicians sit on all foundation boards, on award and grand juries, and on all the Institute’s deliberative bodies. Donors are thus assured that the selection process for applications that benefit from their generosity will be thoughtful, systematic, and according to their wishes.
Independence
The foundations housed at the Insititut de France, although not a separate legal entity, retains its full administrative, financial and accounting autonomy.
This independence of action can be reinforced by creating a separate board of directors to oversee the funds. Governance is equally divided between members of the Institute and administrators appointed by the founder, with the Chancellor having a casting vote in the event of a tie.
Sustainability
Foundations with capital are assured of the continuity of their actions. In this case, only income from capital is employed to implement the work of the foundation.
The Institut de France will support the notary of the donor or the estate in all the necessary procedures.
