The Academie Française published the first edition of its Dictionary. 

The Academie Française published the first edition of its Dictionary in 1694. Honoring the  mission entrusted to it: “to work, with all the care and diligence possible, to give certain rules to our language and to make it pure, eloquent and able to address the arts and sciences.” (Article 24 of the statutes). The Dictionary codified the conjugation, spelling and pronunciation of words.
